ChinesebyDesign is the international arm of the Australasian Centre of Chinese Studies (ACCS), which was established in 1992 in Melbourne, Australia.
Our Goal is to provide our students with an amazing e-learning experience for learning Chinese which is affordable, effective and flexible. This is achieved by providing small group classes on a weekly basis. And, these classes will be based on our Accelerated Learning approach.
Australasian Centre of Chinese Studies
The Centre was started in 1992 by Dr Moni Lai Storz (who was then a senior lecturer at Monash University) to bring the learning of the Chinese language to the Melbourne community using the revolutionary techniques of Accelerated Learning. Together with a scholar from China, Mr Jian-guo Luo, Moni developed a series of 'Chinese using Accelerated Learning Techniques' (CUALT) modules. Together in 1992, they held their first ever experimental CUALT class in Melbourne, for a group of 29 students. This first class turned out to be a huge success where students found themselves learning Chinese Mandarin with complete ease and was having a good time too!
Accelerated Learning
What is it? What does this mean? This means that lessons are taught in interesting and fun ways with music to encourage the students' right side of the brain to work with the left. It means that students use their intellect and their feelings to learn by using their conscious and subconscious minds as a team. The learning conditions are relaxing, where the teacher dramatises the lesson with a story written in English specially to link a cluster of elementary characters together to aid students' memory. This is followed by students conversing in dialogues which are based on the vocabulary acquired in the first part of the lesson.

ChinesebyDesign was established in response to the COVID pandemic when students at the Australasian Centre of Chinese Studies suggested that our Zoom public classes would be fantastic for the rest of the world who wants to learn Chinese.
Australasian Centre of Chinese Studies (ACCS) was established in 1992 in Melbourne, Australia. It is now the leading Language Centre in Australia which specialises in teaching Chinese using Accelerated Learning.
Each Term, we have over 300 adult learners and over 200 kids enrolled supported by an academic faculty of over 20 teachers based in Australia.

Our Team
Dr Moni Lai Storz (nee' Lai Suan Tin) is our Academic Director and is responsible for the development and implementation of our Chinese studies curriculum using Accelerated Learning techniques. Dr Storz spent many years researching and experimenting with accelerated learning methods for the teaching and training of a range of subjects - Sociology, Stress Management, Cross-cultural Communication skills, Learning skills, etc. She was the first to apply Accelerated Learning techniques to the teaching of Chinese writing in Australia and this has been documented in her book: MIND BODY POWER:THE SELF HELP BOOK ON ACCELERATED LEARNING (Times Books International). Moni founded this Chinese Centre 25 years ago and is now currently our Academic Director and Principal.
Jeffrey Lai is the Executive Director of the Australasian Centre of Chinese Studies and is responsible for the Chinese Centre. He is also the Executive Director of Global Business Strategies, a company specialising in cross-cultural mangement training for businesses around the Asia Pacific rim. He has an Electrical Engineering degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology from Monash University. Jeffrey has over fifteen years of experience in the computer industry working for Japanese, Italian and American computer companies prior to establishing ACCS and GBS. Jeffrey is also an experienced trainer using Accelerated Learning techniques. He was a lecturer at the Hawthorn campus of Melbourne University teaching a variety of subjects in the Information Technology area.
Shirley Lo is our Operations Manager and is responsible for the overseeing of all the activities in the organisation which contribute to the smooth and effective operations of ACCS such as supervising staff, project management, working with our clients, students and teachers. She obtained her Bachelor degree at Monash University in Melbourne. She has had 30 years of experience in the corporate sector and was an Operations Manager for an international company before joining our organisation.
Robert Wong is our Chinese Centre Manager and came from Malaysia originally and is fluent in both Chinese Mandarin and English. He was our Senior teacher at our Perth branch of the Australasian Centre of Chinese Studies (ACCS). He makes sure that all goes well with both our students and teachers. Robert loves helping out and chatting to our students and has been praised by many for his friendly, approachable and caring attitude.
He is also currently undertaking a part-time Marketing course at Swinburne University.-
All of our teachers undergo extensive training in our Accelerated Learning techniques and in using the Zoom platform to teach before we unleash them onto you. They are all from China but based in Australia and specially selected for their outgoing and unique personalities. They are fluent in both English and Chinese.
